Wallace Family Apiary Feeding Station- OPEN FEEDING

Cover of "Beekeeping (Complete Pet Owner'...

Cover via Amazon

Today I am feeding the colonies again. A thin sugar syrup for population increase, just before the cold weather arrives.. The only difference in my feeding scheme today is this time I’m using open feeding…that is feeding the bees far from the colonies. It’s easy to set up and you can replenish the pails as needed without having to open a single colony, and not many bees drawn. Another advantage is just like feeding inside the colony, open feeding, from at 75 to 100 yards away, makes robbing a non issue.  I’ve got some videos and still photos of how I did my open feeding , and upon investigating the colonies,  no robbing behavior was observed.  Enjoy the videos and photos. Happy Beekeeping!

More country living- Burn piles

Burn Pile-
Out in the country nobody comes to pick up your down trees, logs, or limbs. To get rid of the yard waste, you got to burn it away. A tornado came through several months ago and brought down two or three trees and a bunch of down limbs. We are having a lawn cutting crew come out to mow our 2 1/2 acres and I wanted to get all of he down limbs out of the way.

The Bees-
The bees are doing well, the bee inspector is going to be out here on Thursday. Well, that is all for today, take care and Happy Beekeeping!!

Take 2: Learning to rear Queens. Outstanding visit to Commercial beekeeper’s Apiary!

This post first appeared July 9, 2010. It is one of my favorite posts, & I wanted to re-post it so that any new followers of my blog  can see it, and those of you have read my blog can enjoy it again.

I also wanted to mention that the number of visitors to our beekeeping blog is: 2,927 visits, we are nearing our 3,000 mark.  We have added some new share buttons and hope that you will share this blog with others. Thank you, Santiago Wallace of Wallace Family Apiary. God bless everyone and Happy Beekeeping!!

Wed July 8, 2010 I went to a commercial Apiary to learn how to graft. I spent the day learning how this commercial Apiary reared queens. I watched the technique they used to graft, and I was able to practice grafting. What surprised me the most, was how small the larvae had to be. I would pick-up a larvae with my grating tool and place it into an artificial queen cup. Then I would ask my instructor how I did and she would say, “that larvae is too big”, or “yes that larvae is the right size, but you killed it”. After much practice and her pointing out the correct size, I was able to discern the correct age larvae….but I still have to practice at home in my apiary. Another thing I learned was that priming the artificial queen cups with Royal jelly helps in removing the larvae off of the grafting tool.
This video is a series of videos I took, combined them into one, and dubbed over with one of  Creed’s song.  I’m going to be posting more on this visit to the commercial Apiary/Commercial beekeeper‘s operation and what I learned, during my stay. This is just a good video to get started. Enjoy, bee good, and Happy Beekeeping!!!

Fall colonies inspection

Today, I examined all of the colonies’ stores. I had been feeding them almost every weekend. I found most of the colonies to have satisfactory stores, and some that where still lacking. My conclusion was that all of my colonies where queen right and all could benefit from more stimulation feeding. I want to get them good and strong and then by the end of this month, I’m going to feed all of the colonies a heavy 2:1 sugar syrup, to sustain them until Spring. Then in the spring really feed them heavily with a 1:1 sugar ratio. Below is a video of my youngest daughter Avery helping me with the inspection. I also took this opportunity to teach her how to carry out an inspection and what to look for. Enjoy the video, and happy Beekeeping!
